Every year, millions across the United States are impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. CDC data shows that more than 1 in 3 women and 1 in 7 men experience sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime.
Additionally, studies have found alcohol or drug use is involved in an estimated 40 to 60% of reported intimate partner violence incidents. While substances can exacerbate the frequency or severity of abuse, they are often a symptom of a deeper crisis; survivors may turn to substances as a primary way to cope with overwhelming trauma, fear, and ongoing emotional distress. Understanding this intersection is vital, as effective healing often requires addressing both the physical safety of the individual and the underlying emotional scars simultaneously.
