Losing someone you love to an overdose brings a pain that's impossible to put into words. Shock, unending questions, emotions you didn't even know existed. You’re likely trying to navigate blindly through this loss while carrying the weight of every moment that led up to it, all through a storm of feelings that seem to contradict each other. Sadness and anger. Guilt, relief and more guilt for having felt any relief at all.
The world doesn't always understand addiction. Instead of seeing it as the complex disease it is, some people still view it as a personal choice or moral failing. This can make you feel like you need to hide your grief or explain your loved one's death in ways that feel dishonest. You might worry about judgment from neighbors, coworkers, even family members who don't understand. When a death is tied to substance use, people may not know how to talk about it or speak in ways that feel minimizing or uncomfortable. This can make it harder to grieve openly and can deepen the sense of isolation many people feel after this kind of loss. Even among people who mean well and want to offer all of the support they can, many are not equipped to support in a way that offers any real relief.
The grief after this type of loss can feel so profoundly different than other losses. Questions may linger with no clear answers, and memories can replay in ways that feel relentless. Many people grieving an overdose loss find themselves stuck in a loop of what ifs. What if I had noticed something sooner. What if I had said something differently. What if I had tried harder. These thoughts can feel impossible to escape.
Support after overdose loss doesn’t always look like feeling better or finding closure. Sometimes it simply means feeling a little less alone. It might be hearing someone else put words to feelings you’ve been carrying silently, or simply sitting in a space where you don’t have to explain certain parts of your grief.
The right kind of support can be quiet and subtle. It may only come from people who truly understand this specific kind of loss first hand. From spaces where your loved one’s story doesn’t need to be softened or defended. From someone who never knew your loved one. From someone who never knew you before your loss.
All of these are reasons why it can be so hard to find the type of support you might need through this time. That’s why we’ve done our best to compile the most complete list of overdose-specific grief resources on the internet. No matter where you’re at in your grief, we hope you can find something in this list that will help.

Below is a collection of grief resources in each state. Because many overdose grief groups operate quietly due to limited funding, a lack of online presence can be common. We’ve done our best to find as many local resources as possible in each state but we understand some of the groups listed may still be outside of the area you’re able to travel to. In this case we have a few tips for finding support that may work better for you:
Ask the linked groups in your area: Reach out to the closest group to you in the list, they may know of a group closer to you or they may be able to offer support in a way that works better for you. Additionally, many of these resources offer online support even if they’re outside of your area so it may be worthwhile to browse the entire list.
Check harm-reduction and overdose-prevention programs in your area: Local syringe service programs, naloxone distribution sites, and overdose-prevention coalitions often host memorial events, support circles, or can quietly point you to grief resources that aren’t widely advertised.
Contact local treatment centers or recovery organizations: Even if they focus on treatment rather than grief, many addiction treatment centers know which support groups exist locally for families and those grieving overdose loss.
Tips for searching online: Try variations like “overdose support,” “addiction loss,” “substance loss grief group,” along with your city or state name.
Ask community health departments or public health offices: Local or county health departments frequently coordinate overdose response efforts and may know about peer-led grief groups or survivor support initiatives in your area.
Faith-based organizations: Some churches, synagogues, or community faith centers host overdose-loss support groups even if they are not advertised publicly.
